This is one of those images that is impossible to miss. The first effect is very violent because the dead bird stands on the chest of the model ... but after watcher recovers of this first painful impression, and look closely at the picture, the horror is immediately replaced by a mass emotions.
The first one: a literary deja vu. Think one ... Emily Dickinson in TS Eliot ... in many poets who have been associated a broken heart with a dead bird. Here, that heart-bird is not a metaphor: in a vision so brutal as beautiful ... is a real blow to the chest. A hook to the liver. Tickle tears in the eyes.
The title, on the other hand, refers to the death: heart stopped. And yet, the photo breathes, is full of life. That seems dead bird about to take flight as representing the spirit about to detach from the body. This contrast between shown and what is a great success encourages the artist.
Excellent approach. Impeccable technical management of the shadows around the body, and that in turn manages to stand out against the white-breasted bird. Only I object model's expression. The rigidity of her body is wonderful, but the half smile somewhat ruins the drama of that position. Although this detail, it is a really excellent photo.
I'll start by getting the "oh, poor birdie " out of my system.
I was going to leave without a critique until I realized.. 'this girl is naked!' With the background colors being so muted and the bird being crystal clear, my eyes immediately focused on the bird's color pattern instead of the fact this girl is naked. I was simply blown away by the fact that an artist could make the main focus be something else for once. This is a beautiful, very original piece.
I applaud the guts it took to do this, and I admire the work of both the model and the photographer. This is the type of work is certainly refreshing and leaves me asking questions about it.
I hope you continue to do more work like this. It's simply amazing that you can make the viewer see something other than nudity. Congratulations!
